Dolphins Defeat Newberry and Pickens The Cherokee County Family YMCA Dolphin Swim Team opened their summer season with a win over Pickens County YMCA Piranahs and the Newberry YMCA Eels at home at the Limestone College Pool. The scores were: Cherokee Dolphins – 820, Pickens Piranahs – 602, and Newberry Eels – 574. The Dolphins set seven new team records. Matthew Overton led the way with four new records in the 6 and under boys age group. Matthew set new records in the 25 yard freestyle (18.86), the 50 yard freestyle (42.87), the 25 yard butterfly (25.83), and the 100 yard IM (201.49). Matthew had a perfect meet with 4 first place finishes. Steven Wright set a new record in the boys 13-14 50 yard backstroke with a time of 34.17. This broke a previous record set by Billy Lundkovsky back in 1997. Zach Guest set a new record in the boys 13-14 100 yard IM with a time of 1:15.13, and Adam Simmons set a new record in the boys 15 and over 100 yard freestyle with a time of 56.07. The girls 15 & over 200 year freestyle relay team of Logan-Lydia Gaffney, Erin Love, Anna Thompson, and Brittany Peterson set a new record with a time of 2:05.84. Several swimmers competed for the first time in this meet. Caroline Harris placed 2nd in the girls 7-8 25 yard backstoke and 4th in the girls 7-8 25 yard freestyle. Marshall Harris finished 4th in the 9-10 boys 50 yard backstroke and 50 yard freestyle. Morgan Humphries placed 10th in the 9-10 girls 50 yard backstroke and 9th in the 50 yard freestyle. Luke Morgan placed 3rd in the boys 7-8 50 yard backstroke and 4th in the 25 yard freestyle. First place finishers included Keri Bloomer in the girls 9-10 50 yd backstroke and 50 yd freestyle, Andrew Dorchak in the boys 6 & under 25 yd backstroke, Samuel Dorchak in the 7-8 boys 25 yd freestyle and 25 yd backstroke, Brady Ellis in the 11-12 boys 50 yd breaststroke, Logan-Lydia Gaffney in the 13-14 girls 100 yd IM, Zach Guest in the 14-14 boys 50 yd breaststroke, Matthew Overton it the 6&Under boys 50 yd freestyle, 25 yd butterfly, 25 yd freestyle, and 100 yd IM, Brittany Peterson in the 15 & over girls 50 yd backstroke, 50 yd butterfly, 50 yd. freestyle, and 100 yd IM, Anna Thompson in the 15&Over girls 100 yd freestyle and 50 yd breaststroke, and Steven Wright in the boys 13-14 100 yd backstroke. Along with the first place finishers, Cameron Bramlett, Cody Byars, Devin Byars, Emily Dorchak, Alex Guest, Caroline Harris, Chase Huskey, Erin Love, Steven Lux, Luke Morgan, Robbie Peterson, Adam Simmons, and Nicole Spencer all had at least one or more 2nd or 3rd place finishes. Twenty two of our twenty-six returning swimmers had best times in at least one event or swam an event for the first time. This was an awesome performance given that we’ve only been practicing for 3 weeks. The Dolphins’ next meet will be in Rock Hill on June 5, 2004.
